The Art Of Honouring Commitments: Fulfilling Promises – Positive Reflection Of The Week

Exploring the Impact of Honouring Commitments  – Article by Shahwana

In many instances, we commit to something or someone but don’t follow up on the promises we made. It could be anything – from making casual commitments to serious ones. For example, you meet a long-lost friend on the road one day, and it’s all excitement. You part ways, promising to meet up soon and keep in touch. However, no numbers were exchanged or dates fixed for a meetup again. From your side, this may be something you don’t think about too often. However, it’s not an honourable commitment; it was a casual conversation where both parties had no real commitment to see or call. But when there is a commitment, then show up – then stay true to your word.

Remember, what we give, we receive. We know of people who promise a meeting and don’t show up or even call to cancel or explain. For example, in wedding party invites, the word RSVP is always seen. How many of us honour this, call to confirm attendance, or inform the host of our unavailability? It creates a lot of burden on the host for catering per head commitment of paying. Have we thought of this? This also means showing up on time or rather being before time is honourable. We also need to honour ourselves when we want to make changes on diet, exercises, seeing parents, or other commitments.

There is a saying ‘what you give comes back to you many times,’ so think, reflect on what seeds we are planting to harvest what is ongoing in our life. In the days of our grandparents, loans were given on trust and just words. We need to develop the skill of honourship. After all, what we plant, we harvest.
