Relieving Neck Stiffness Exercises for Flexibility and Relief

Exercises to Loosen Up Your Stiff Neck

Neck stiffness can be a common issue, especially for those who spend long hours sitting at a desk or engaging in repetitive activities. Incorporating targeted exercises into your routine can help alleviate tension, improve flexibility, and provide relief from a stiff neck.

1. Neck Stretches

Side-to-Side Neck Stretch: Gently tilt your head towards one shoulder until you feel a stretch on the opposite side of your neck. Hold for 15-30 seconds, then switch sides.

Forward and Backward Neck Stretch: Slowly lower your chin towards your chest, feeling a stretch along the back of your neck. Hold for 15-30 seconds, then tilt your head back and look towards the ceiling, feeling a stretch in the front of your neck. Repeat several times.

2. Neck Rotations

Slow Neck Rotations: Gently turn your head to one side, trying to bring your chin towards your shoulder. Hold for a few seconds, then return to the centre and repeat on the other side. Perform several repetitions, moving slowly and smoothly.

3. Shoulder Rolls

Shoulder Circles: Roll your shoulders forward in a circular motion, then reverse the direction and roll them backward. This exercise helps relieve tension in the neck and shoulders, promoting relaxation and flexibility.

4. Chin Tucks

Chin Tuck: Sit or stand with your spine tall. Gently draw your chin inward, creating a double chin appearance. Hold for a few seconds, then release. Repeat several times to strengthen the muscles at the front of your neck and improve posture.

Incorporate these exercises into your daily routine to help alleviate neck stiffness and improve mobility. Remember to perform them gently and gradually increase intensity as tolerated. If you experience persistent neck pain or discomfort, consult with a healthcare professional for further evaluation and guidance.
