The Physical and Emotional Health Benefits of Having a Pet

Many of us are already dog and cat lovers, we may even have a bird, or a hamster sharing our house. In these trying times, it’s important to understand there are real benefits to having a pet.
It’s scientifically proven that pets; can decrease depression, stress, and anxiety. They also reduce blood pressure in a short session of petting your dog or cat, and levels of serotonin and dopamine, two neurochemicals that play big roles in calm and wellbeing increase in when interacting with pets.

Having a pet requiring your feeding, exercise and care, gives you a reason to get up and keep a schedule
when it’s easy to want to stay in bed these days.

Many studies find that dog owners stay active and mobile much later in life as most walk their dogs and play with them outside daily.
Reduce allergies, in a study in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology having a dog or cat can actually LOWER the chance of becoming allergic to pets, by up to 33 %

If you can open your home to foster an animal or you think now is a great time to adopt a dog or cat, both KPSCA and TNR Trust have many great animals up for foster or adoption. While being stuck indoors and working from home with minimal human interaction, it’s a great time to bring home a pet both for the animal’s sake and also ours!
