The End Of The Road For Kenya’s Wildlife? – By Raabia Hawa

Wildlife Conservation With Raabia Hawa

Last Thursday, Kenya lost a young lioness to reckless driving along the Loitoktok- Emali road.

Roadkill isn’t something new to Kenyans, but when it begins to threaten the survival of a species, we should all be very concerned.

In the last year alone, I have personally witnessed critical species lost to overspeeding on newly smoothened roads. What makes it worse for me, is most times they are left to die with horrific injuries- without even a chance of being rescued on the hot tarmac.

They slowly breathe their last breath, lucky if they aren’t repeatedly crushed in multiple areas of their bodies by oncoming traffic, who simply seem not to care.

We can do better as Kenyans. We can keep ourselves safe too by strapping in, watching the sides of the road for animals who are about to cross, and doing away with the mentality of “pita tu naye!”.

Let’s find out humanity again, let’s recognise these creatures as more than just “animals”- these are part of our heritage as Kenyans. They belong to us, and we are their shepherds.

Let us treat them so.

Slow down. Save Lions… and squirrels, and zebras, and baby elephants, and giraffes, and leopards… all of which we have lost too many of on our roads.

Change starts with you.
