Remembering Sudan – The Last Male Northern White Rhino
On the 19th of March 2023, the world marked the 5th year since the passing of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino on Ol Pejeta Conservancy. A species decimated by poaching and civil war, just two northern white rhinos are now known to remain. To mark this occasion, Ol Pejeta’s Global Ambassador, photographer and filmmaker Ami Vitale, documents the plight of the species in her latest award-winning short film.
Remembering Sudan captures the journey of the northern white rhino’s through the eyes of Ol Pejeta’s Head Caregiver Zacharia Mutia. From the heartbreaking crisis threatening the species and the tireless dedication and sacrifice of their keepers, to the groundbreaking scientific developments aimed at bringing the species back from the brink of extinction.
