Plain Naan (makes 8)

INGREDIENTS

2 cups all-purpose flour
3 tbsp cooking oil
2 tsp yeast
1 tsp sugar
½ tsp salt
⅛ tsp or a pinch of baking soda
1 cup of warm water

METHOD

STEP 1
In a bowl add the flour and make a well in the centre, then add the sugar, salt, baking soda, yeast and 1 tbsp of oil. Mix all well using your hands. Now gradually add the water and mix in between keep adding 1 tbsp of oil (little by little). When the dough has become sticky keep using the remaining oil to grease your palms (little at a time and as required) then knead your dough for about 5-7 mins making sure that a smooth dough is formed and that doesn’t stick to your palms or the bowl. Now grease the bowl very lightly then add the dough. Cover it with cling film and put it in a warm place (oven or microwave) for at least 3 hrs or until the dough has doubled in size.

STEP 2
When the dough is ready, knead it again for a couple of minutes then divide into 8 balls. Dip each ball in some flour and sprinkle some on the surface you will be using to roll then naan. Roll out a naan using a rolling pin in either round or elongated shape.

STEP 3
Turn on your stove and let the tawa (griddle)heat. Now with your hand apply some water on the top side and then place the (water) side down on previously heated tawa on low to medium flame. Press the naan, using your hands, from the center and then on the sides allowing it to stick to the tawa. Once you see bubbles form all over, turn the whole tawa upside down and now cook the other side directly on the flame making sure the naan is not touching the flame. Keep moving the tawa to allow even cooking.

2 Variations That You Can Try:
1. Naan sprinkled with sesame seeds– Before cooking your naan, apply sesame seeds on the same side you apply water then gently press them so they stick onto the naan.
2. Stuffed naan with aaloo or kheema( minced meat)- You can choose the stuffing of your choice then make the ball and roll it out into a naan. Always make sure your stuffing is dry & not watery.

Serve hot! You can also serve with anything such as karahi dish!
