PERFECT HOMEMADE BREAD (2 loaves)

INGREDIENTS

4-5 cups bread or baking flour (or more if needed)
2¼ cups of warm water
1tbsp instant dry yeast
2 tbsp vegetable cooking oil
¾ tbsp salt
Ice-cold water

METHOD

STEP 1
In a bowl add your sugar and yeast then add ¼ cup warm water (make sure it is not too hot) & mix then leave aside whilst the yeast activates, depending on what yeast is being used it may take a few minutes to become frothy.

STEP 2
In a separate bowl add 3 cups of flour & salt and combine with a spatula then pour in the yeast mixture and water and combine with your spatula. Add in another cup of flour and mix until the dough leaves the sides of the bowl and doesn’t stick to your fingers. You can keep adding flour until you reach a desired soft dough consistency that isn’t sticky, then knead for a few minutes and gather into a ball.

STEP 3
Grease a bowl with some oil and add your dough ball to this. Cover with a greased cling film & leave in a warm place to rise for an hour.

STEP 4
Once your dough has risen on a greased marble surface divide your dough roughly into half. With your hands roll out each dough to a thick but not too thick rectangular shape & not too thin as it will rip. Then for each rectangular piece, take one long end and start rolling or folding the dough over making sure to press out any air and seal the ends by pinching or tucking under. Leave the tucked side under and on the upper surface with a sharp knife make some gashes about an inch apart. Place each loaf on a baking sheet or aluminium foil and cover with cling film and let it rise for another hour.

STEP 5
Preheat your oven at 375 degrees. Once the dough has doubled, splash some cold water with your fingers on the topside where the gashes were made. Place in the oven and allow to bake for up to 35 minutes or until the top is golden brown in colour. Remove from the oven and slather some butter on top of the loaf before cutting to desired sized slices.

Note: You can store the loaves wrapped in aluminium foil for up to 3-4 days in a cool and dry place!

Serve with soup, eggs or any warm curry!
