dry food
All cat owners must know that cats are picky eaters. These ‘purrfect’ felines have a selective palate, for this reason, some kitties may favour dry food over wet food and vice versa. As a purrent it’s important to make sure that your cat has a balanced diet and consumes food with adequate nutritional value. If you are figuring out dry food is good or bad for your feline friend, keep reading!

Dry Food Contains More Carbs-

Too many carbs can lead to obesity & diabetes in cats! – Cats only need a small number of carbs in their diets as they are naturally carnivores which means that they need proteins and fatty acids to thrive. Dry foods, unfortunately, contain a high content of carbs compared to wet food & some may contain proteins from vegetables rather than meat which is also not good for your cat. If you are concerned about the content of carbs read the contents of the dry food to see if it has an acceptable amount of carbs or not. If you are not sure ask your vet, to help you pick a specialty brand that has very little amount of carbs.

Dry Food Contains Low Moisture Content-

Cats don’t drink a lot of water and rely on their food for their daily water/fluid intake. Dry foods, unfortunately, have very low moisture content and for this reason, cats are at high risk of kidney, bladder, and urinary tract issues. Also because your feline friend who is just on dry food will end up having prolonged dehydration which could lead to kidney stones and kidney disease. If your feline friend loves to have dry food you can use it as a treat or sprinkle water on it so that your cat can be well hydrated.

To conclude, always ask your vet about what should or should not be included in your feline friend’s diet. Few carbs here and there, won’t hurt your cat, but it’s important to make sure that your cat has a balanced diet and is well nourished as well as hydrated! If your cat loves dry food just make sure it’s not the only thing your cat eats, you can find ways of having water along with the necessary proteins and fats included in his/her diet, without having to exclude dry food completely!
