Soul Inspired

ASHWIN PATEL

Date: from 9th – 15th October 2019
Venue: Village Market Exhibition Hall

A collection of intricate artwork. Fine lines, shapes and shades painstakingly and lovingly created, inspired by the soul.

A few years ago my passion for drawing was re-awoken, I reconnected with my love for creating art. I have been exploring new ways to create new forms which bring out the best of how I feel. I began doodling on anything I could find, whether it was my glasses case or the back of an envelope. Art for me is an emotion, a journey into the unknown and I know I have to map my own paths along the way. This reawakening has allowed my emotions and soul to evolve. Allowing myself into a fantasy world; one where, as I express myself, I begin to find the inner calm that I’ve always desired to have.

The peace, happiness and clarity that I find in the morning is my meditation time. By drawing and painting, I find I am on a quest to find the real me – Who am I?

My passion is not about creativity alone, it’s about the person I am becoming when I am creating, the calmness, happiness, peace, so to speak, the Zen that I experience. I have a wild mind and through my art, I channel it onto paper and canvas. I play around, I experiment. As an artist I love to work with my hands, my mind and my heart and only when all these are aligned, I am able to create. I play with colours, textures, materials, emotions and end up on an unknown journey through each piece.

For me, Art is a language which can be interpreted in different ways, it’s a language where each person has their own dialect.

Although much of my work started with white paper and a black pen, I sometimes venture into semi-abstract backgrounds; many times reflecting on the human form. My markers and paints are in hues of brilliant colours and quite playful. No matter how many drawings or paintings I have completed, every piece is an opportunity to experience a new rollercoaster on a canvas, without knowing how it will end.

Awakenings is my first exhibition, ever. There is a scary thrill of putting myself and the art pieces that I have created out into the world. For me as an artist, I want my pieces to speak to you in a way that you want to understand and interpolate each piece within your own fantasies. I would love for something within you to awaken, to find something that you have been looking for, to have the courage to do something you have always wanted to do, to find peace, happiness and clarity from within.

Art is no longer a hobby, it’s the way I want to live.

New Artist Feature: Ashwin Patel

Ashwin, tell us a little bit about yourself?

I was born in Nairobi and I’ve been living in Kenya for over 40 years now, I consider myself a pretty fun-loving person who loves to hang out with my family and friends. I enjoy spending time in the outdoors and experiencing this beautiful country that we live in.
Over the past few years, I’ve reconnected with my love for creating. It started with my love for the environment and my plants. I started growing orchids and bonsais at home. The more time I spent nurturing these plants, the more I craved to create more.

How did you get into creating art?

When I was younger I was quite artistic, but work took over and my creating was put on hold. A few years ago, when my granddaughter was turning one, I wanted to do something different for her, give her something special, something that I hope whenever she looks at, she knows that I am with her and part of her life all the time. I’m proud to say that she’s the lucky owner of my very first art piece (after I started creating again).

Tell us a little bit about your creations?

I began doodling on anything I could find, whether it was my glasses case or the back of an envelope. My first pieces are my black and white pen drawings on paper, I moved onto adding some pastel colours into my creations and eventually more vibrant colours. These pieces are done with colourful markers on paper. I then started experimenting with canvas and other materials acrylic paints and more. I love the thrill of experimenting and trying new techniques and materials.

How do you feel when you are in your element creating art?

Art for me is an emotion, a journey into the unknown and I know I have to map my own paths along the way. This reawakening has allowed my emotions and soul to evolve. Allowing myself into a fantasy world; one where, as I express myself, I begin to find the inner calm that I’ve always desired to have.

So, Awakenings is your first exhibition, how are you feeling about it?

It is my first exhibition, ever.

I would like to invite all of you to Awakenings, which will be at the Village Market Exhibition Hall from the 9th – 15th of October and hope you enjoy my work as much as I’ve enjoyed creating it.
