YOGA FOR ASTHMA
2 Yoga Postures For Asthma By Pooja Doshi
Eagle Pose – Garudasana:
Stand in mountain posture. Bend your knees slightly, lift your left foot up, and balancing on your right foot, cross your left thigh over the right. Point your left toes toward the floor, press the foot back, and then hook the top of the foot behind the lower right calf. Then balance on the right foot.
Stretch your arms straight forward, parallel to the floor. Cross your arms with the right one going over the left so that the right arm is above the left, then bend your elbows. The palms should be facing each other like in Namaste.
Stay for 15 to 30 seconds, then unwind the legs and arms and stand in Tadasana again. Repeat for the same length of time with the arms and legs reversed.
Benefits:
This posture strengthens and stretches the ankles and calves
This stretches the thighs, hips, shoulders, and upper back
This posture also improves concentration and sense of balance
Cow Pose – Bitilasana:
This is an excellent posture to warm up the spine.
Start on your hands and knees like a tabletop, making sure your knees are set directly below your hips and your wrists, elbows and shoulders are in line and perpendicular to the floor. Centre your head in a neutral position, eyes looking at the floor.
As you inhale, lift your sitting bones and chest toward the ceiling, allowing your belly to sink toward the floor. Lift your head to look straight forward.
Exhale, coming back to neutral’tabletop’ position on your hands and knees. Repeat 10 to 20 times.
Benefits:
Stretches the front torso and neck
Provides a gentle massage to the spine and belly organs
The above are examples of postures which help with asthma. The benefits of yoga are endless but it is essential that you attend lessons to perfect your body alignment to avoid injuries and to maximize the benefits before you embark on practising independent yoga postures.
