Turning Negative Experiences Into A Positive One – Positive Reflection Of The Week

How To Turn A Negative Experience Into A Positive One – By Alia Datoo

Love is the bridge between you and everything – Rumi

Everything in life happens for a reason and there are no accidents. If at all, anything good and/or bad can be viewed as a lesson and test. Some might disagree and say that things happen as they should and that no one deliberately attracts a negative event or experience into their life. The point here is, regardless of the outcome that you were anticipating, one should be happy whether you get it or not!

If we concentrate on the “Whys” of negative things happening, we will miss out on the lesson it was meant to teach us. Instead, look for the silver lining behind the event, here’s how:

Firstly, look for what the event taught you, or how you grew through the experience. Secondly, process each amount with an equal amount of forgiveness and unconditional love towards yourself and others. Thirdly, once you have made up your mind to change your mindset and approach the event differently, the mud would have settled and you can then look for the “Golden Nugget of Wisdom” – the lesson or the test that the experience. And lastly, recognize that everything works for your highest good. You may have come across the expression, “blessing in disguise”, well very often, if not most often, those things that we thought turned out to be the worst turned out to be the best! – but only if you choose to see it this way.

When I write, I look at my own life experiences to share. I usually draw from the insights I have gathered that serve as the gist of ideas for my articles. There is so much we are all going through in our own way, but we all have the choice to look at things positively and impact people in a more inspiring way.

Maybe you experienced a recent end to a serious relationship, and this may, in the present moment appear to be the worst thing that ever happened. But what if, twenty years down the line, it ended up being the best thing that could ever happen. How many inspiring stories have we heard of terminally ill patients, going on spiritual quests and discovering a much more, deeper meaning and purpose to life? How many Paralympians had to make that shift in their attitude to turn their shortcomings into their greatest strengths and victory? Did you know Mother Teresa had a failing heart, yet she chose to serve the world from a place of so much love and compassion, no one would have guessed!

Take a look at the story of Job in the Bible. He lost everything – his health, money, and family, all at once. He wasn’t very happy about this, but in the end, he realized he had let go of all his attachments. He was free from suffering. Buddha said, of the Four Noble Truths, suffering comes from attachments. Does this not sum it all up right there? Your suffering, comes from your attitude and your attachments, not what is going on in your life.

Once you are able to change your attitude towards what is happening in your life, you will be able to turn any negative situation into a positive one, no matter how grave the catastrophe. Maybe you were meant to experience something negatively so that you could learn the lesson from it and prevent it from happening to others. Ever thought about it this way? You’re welcome!
