TNR Trust- The Dawn of Puppy Season
The Dawn of Puppy Season
As predicted, puppy season is here along with the rains, combined with COVID-19 still being a threat has resulted in hotels, butcheries and restaurants closed. The community-owned and free-roaming dogs and cats are having a hard time with no food or scraps available.
Last week TNR Trust’s vet Dr. Desmond Tutu went to Kibra to try to catch an emaciated bitch with 8 puppies. Brian and Marta, volunteers that run an orphanage in Kibra and also volunteer with TNR Trust saw this dog several months ago. She is back with a fractured and badly healed leg and her 4 remaining puppies. The dog was easy to catch; she came for food and was put in a crate along with her pups for transport.
The dog has been named Dawn, she is eating well now after being dewormed (she had loads of intestinal parasites.) Her leg is being cleaned daily. She is starting to produce more milk since she was dewormed and is getting steady meals. There is still purulent discharge from two drainage sites, but she is on pain management, antibiotics and steroids to battle the infection. She was seen today by an orthopaedic vet for X-ray and consultation. Dawn will need to have the leg amputated and some rehabilitation. There are numerous breaks, part of the bone appears to be dead on the X-ray and it’s badly fused in several places, no kind of surgery will fix that leg.
The pups are eating well and have also been will be dewormed and fully vaccinated before adoption. If you can make a small donation to her surgery or care for her and the pups, TNR Trust would be grateful! The pups will be ready for adoption in several weeks if you are looking to adopt a pup.
