Rest – By Michelle Arscott
REST – An Important Aspect Of Wellness – by Michelle Arscott
The focus of this week’s wellness video is rest. In a society that prides itself on busyness and productivity, rest can be easily neglected, something saved for distant summer holidays.
However, rest is a fundamental physiological requirement, a necessary stage before you can reach the higher stages of life such as self- actualisation. Rest helps to rejuvenate and re-charge your batteries, and if your body does not get enough rest, then it will force you to rest with health issues.
Having time to connect with yourself, allows you to have time to reflect and to, for example, know if you are on your right path. When you are busy, it is very easy to function on autopilot and dis-connect from your emotions, desires and what makes you truly happy.
Rest is not just about 8 hours sleep a night, rest is also about having time away from your normal routine and productivity.
What does rest look like?
Rest could be a time of solitude and stillness, a time to connect with yourself, your thoughts and check in on your own needs, thinking about what you need to nurture and nourish yourself. For example, people practice mindfulness and meditation to achieve this.
It could be a time where you have a break from your responsibilities and you take your various hats off, your parent hat or your work hat or your husband or wife hat, and just be.
Rest could be being in your safe space, feeling cocooned, peaceful and calm.
It could be going outdoors and connecting with nature.
What does rest look like for you?
How are you going to prioritise rest in the following days and weeks?
It could be anything from 5-10 minutes every day to a luxurious whole day or weekend.
Once you have made the commitment to incorporate more rest into your life, then you will actually be more productive and positive.
Have a restful week!
