Keep Your Vehicle In Top Condition During Long Periods Of Inactivity
How to Maintain Your Car When It’s Not in Use
If you’re not driving your car for an extended period, it’s important to take certain steps to ensure it remains in excellent condition. Neglecting your vehicle during downtime can lead to various issues, but with proper care, you can keep it ready for the road whenever you need it.
1. Keep the Battery Charged
One of the most common problems with cars that sit idle is a dead battery. To prevent this, consider using a trickle charger to maintain the battery’s charge. If a charger isn’t available, starting the car once every two weeks and letting it run for about 15 minutes can help keep the battery healthy.
2. Maintain Proper Tire Pressure
Tires can lose pressure over time, especially when a vehicle is stationary. Check the tire pressure regularly and inflate them to the recommended level. This prevents flat spots from developing and ensures that your tires are in good condition when you’re ready to drive again.
3. Protect Against Rust and Corrosion
Rust can develop on your car if it’s left unused for too long, especially in humid environments. To prevent this, keep your car clean and dry. Regularly wash and wax your vehicle, and consider using a car cover to protect it from moisture and dirt.
4. Use a Fuel Stabiliser
Fuel can degrade over time, leading to problems when you try to start the car. Adding a fuel stabiliser to the tank before you store the vehicle can help prevent the fuel from breaking down. Be sure to run the engine for a few minutes after adding the stabiliser to circulate it through the system.
5. Avoid Engaging the Parking Brake
Leaving the parking brake engaged for extended periods can cause the brake pads to stick to the rotors. Instead of using the parking brake, place a block behind the wheels to keep the car stationary.
6. Keep It Covered
If you have access to a garage, park your car inside to protect it from the elements. If you don’t have a garage, use a high-quality car cover to shield your vehicle from sun, rain, and dust.
7. Maintain Fluids and Oil
Even when your car is not in use, fluids can degrade or evaporate. Check the oil, coolant, brake fluid, and other essential fluids periodically, and top them up as needed. Changing the oil before storing the car is also a good idea to prevent any contaminants from causing damage.
8. Start and Move the Car Occasionally
If possible, start the car and move it a short distance every few weeks. This helps keep the engine parts lubricated and prevents the tires from developing flat spots. A brief drive around the block can also help keep all systems functioning properly.
9. Keep the Interior Fresh
To prevent the interior from developing odours or mould, ensure the car is clean and dry before storing it. Consider placing moisture-absorbing products inside the car, and leave the windows slightly cracked to allow for ventilation.
10. Check for Rodent Protection
Cars left unused can attract rodents, which may chew through wires or cause other damage. Take steps to prevent rodents from entering your vehicle by sealing any potential entry points and using deterrents like mothballs or peppermint oil.
Taking care of your vehicle even when it’s not in use is essential for ensuring its longevity and performance. By following these tips, you can keep your car in top condition, ready to hit the road whenever you need it.
