GENEALOGY
In 1921, Gabrielle Chanel decided to create a fragrance unlike any other:
“A woman’s perfume with the scent of a woman.”
To fulfil her request, perfumer Ernest Beaux broke with the traditional codes of perfumery and presented her with an olfactory revolution.
Mademoiselle gave the scent a name like a code.
N°5
A name that made all others unfashionable.
In 1986, Jacques Polge, CHANEL Master Perfumer since 1978, reinterpreted his predecessor’s olfactory signature to create an even more generous version of N°5: the Eau de Parfum.
GEOMETRY
To house N°5, Mademoiselle chose a simple laboratory bottle. A minimalist design that would highlight the fragrance.
The stopper, cut like a diamond, was inspired by the shape of the Place Vendôme in Paris. The lines of the now-iconic classic bottle have remained virtually unchanged since its creation.
