Getting What You Want From Life – Positive Reflection Of The Week
How To Get What You Want From Life?
“Every Human Being has a Personal Legend to be fulfilled and this is our reason for being in the world. This Personal Legend manifests itself in our enthusiasm for the task” – Paulo Coelho.
I just co-authored my first book. It will be published in September, I enjoy writing and have always aspired to be a writer. So when I was asked to Co-Author a book. I was thrilled. To many, this may translate to me having bagged it as a successful writer, but sometimes I wonder if I’m even up to the mark.
But that’s not what I am focusing on here. And it’s not what you should be focusing on either. What we are here to focus on is, what YOU want to do with YOUR life!
First off, you have to realise that what you “want to do” is a moving target. What you wanted three years or even three months ago is NOT what you want now. The fact is that we are in a state of constant change. You don’t just arrive at your goals, kick your feet up and then do what you “want to do” for the rest of your life till you die. No. You arrive, figure out what you wanted was not the best, aspire something else and work towards that. In other words, your goals are ever-evolving.
Which brings me to my next point: Changing goalposts actually gets you closer to your “Personal Legend”. Do you remember as a child you were asked what you wanted to be/do, and you blurted out a ludicrous version of something? Well, that was actually your soul guiding you to your Personal Legend. But because of all the doubts and fears society ingrains into us, while we are blossoming into adults, we let our Personal Legend fade. The truth is, what we want is not a destination. What we want isn’t even THE destination in the first place. Getting closer to our Personal Legend is.
So, how do you figure out your Personal Legend?
1. FORGET THE MONEY AND FORGET REASON.
You have a passion that you want to pursue, but it won’t help pay the bills. What do you do instead? Get a 9-5 to help pay your bills and end up miserable! Listen to that little voice in your head. Take the leap! You will never be happier. Trust yourself.
2. DO IT EVEN IF IT SCARES YOU.
I quit my full-time job to pursue my passion for hiking. It was an uphill battle. Laying the groundwork, setting out marketing strategies, getting things off the ground. To make it even harder, I’m an introvert. Talking is not my thing. But I got over it. Doing stuff that scares you is horrible in the beginning, but they help you grow. It is hard to do at first and you may even fail at facing your fears a couple of times, and that is perfectly okay. At least you are trying. Some don’t even try.
3. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.
Facing your fears is hard, but it boosts your confidence. You realise that they aren’t invincible, and every time you are faced with a challenge you will find the strength to overcome it. One by one you will overcome your obstacles and move towards your goals. Every achievement will lay a brick on the foundation of your goals. So go for it!
4. WORK HARD.
You can master all the confidence in the world, overcome the fear of fear itself, be done with focusing on the money, BUT, without the work, you won’t get anywhere. Focus all your energy and resources towards this and dive right in. I remember when I was starting off I would spend hours learning how to put out posts on Social Media that would get the most traction. I would be staring at my laptop screen until my eyes would bleed. It may seem monotonous and feel like you are going nowhere, but it will be worth it.
5. DON’T GET TOO COMFORTABLE WHERE YOU ARE.
So, you achieved your goal. You are on top of the world and the views are amazing. But, have you thought about flying off into the horizon? Or, probably building a bridge to link you to the next mountain? Being good at what you are and getting better at it will get you closer to your Personal Legend. Innovation helps you live your life to the fullest, even when you feel like there is nothing more you can do.
Although my personal legend is still unknown to me, I have a clearer direction and feel closer to knowing what it is. If you follow the steps in this article, you’ll know too!
