Encourage Your Child To Dream!- H&S Education & Parenting
Why You Should Encourage Your Child To Dream!
A question we have all encountered as kids is ‘what do you dream of becoming?’ Some of us have dreamt to be a pilot, a doctor, an engineer and so much more. For those of us who had parents who helped us realise our dreams know the importance of dreaming big and for those who had parents not so supportive of their dreams, here’s the chance to help your child with his/her dreams! Every child dreams of becoming something, but some kids have their dreams dismissed, and that can be extremely discouraging, preventing the child from chasing his/her dreams and fully reaching their potential. As parents, it is your responsibility to encourage your child to dream big and chase after their dreams. Remember, your child’s dream may not resonate with yours, and it shouldn’t. You had the chance to live and fulfil your dream, this is their chance to chase theirs.
4 Reasons To Push Your Child To Chase His/Her Dreams:
1. They Give A Sense Of Purpose:
That’s right! Whatever your child desires to be, his/her passion is what fuels their purpose. Remember, if your child is encouraged to follow what he/she desires to be, then he/she will be motivated to work harder towards achieving his/her dreams.
2. Set Them Up For Success:
Children are natural dreamers and tend to be optimistic. Dreams are, thus, usually the bigger picture of what a child wants in life, setting them up for success from childhood.
3. They Make Them Resilient:
Sometimes dreaming big can be daunting, and for this reason a child may not be willing to chase their dreams. This is when parents need to encourage and push their child to dream big and help them realise that he/she is capable of being anything provided they set their mind to it and don’t listen to what others have to say, that even though the road to achieving those dreams may not be easy, the final outcome will make it worthwhile. If a child is guided by the parents, then no challenge can deter the child from achieving his/her dreams.
4. Makes Them Confident & Responsible:
By encouraging your child to dream, you allow them to learn that they are responsible for most of the choices & decisions they make. This gives them a sense of responsibility, as well as boosts their self-confidence, as they’re allowed to explore their choices.
4 Steps To Encourage Your Child To Dream:
As a parent, you should push your child as well as equip them to dreaming big and here’s how you should do it:
1. Believe In Them & Allow Them To Follow Their Passion- A child needs to know that their dreams matter and when this comes from their most trusted person they are confident to pursue whatever it is they desire.
2. Talk To Them About The Challenges- It’s important to let children know that setbacks & disappointments are a normal part of life, but pushing on and rising, despite them, is what matters. A child should be taught to be resilient whilst chasing dreams. This resilience helps them to understand and overcome challenges.
3. Teach Them The Importance Of Goal Setting- An essential skill to follow through with a purposeful action is goal setting. This is a skill set that will be helpful throughout their lives as they keep dreaming big. You can start them young by setting small achievable goals before moving on to bigger ones.
4. Equip Your Child With The Right Tools Needed For Success- The successes along the way, in order to achieve the goal, are critical. These successes could be doing well on exams, learning a new skill etc.
It’s important to understand and teach your child that no dream is big or small
