Ecstatic Dance is free-form movement / dance inspired by thoughtfully curated music, allowing bodies to move freely without judgment or concern for the ‘grace’ or beauty of the dance. This is how you dance when nobody is watching ?.
Ecstatic Dance Nairobi (EDN) is an invitation to drop out of the egoic self/rational mind, be present with your own energy, and allow it to move through you, releasing stuck patterns in mind, body, or spirit.
This is a safe space to move freely, reconnect body with spirit, and experience a natural high as music takes you on an inner journey. In ecstatic dance, your energy is the guide to your movement.
Movement as medicine is not new. Our ancestors understood the innate healing power contained within the body, and the power of dance, song, and other body-based rituals to unleash our capacity to heal ourself and our communities. However, modern life and technology has destroyed our connection to this capacity. Many of us spend most of our day seated and staring at screens, and we are encouraged to operate exclusively from the limited logical brain.
EDN is for everyone – your socioeconomic class, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, and experience with dance does not matter here. There are several guidelines:
– No shoes
– No phones on the dance floor
– No alcohol or drugs
– No touching without consent
– No talking on the dance floor
– No nudity, but please dress however inspires you and supports you on the journey to non-self-judgment
