Communication In Romantic Relationships – By Shahela Sheikh

How To Maintain A Romantic Relationship Using The Power Of Effective Communication – Written By Shahela Sheikh

When it comes to relationships, every Love Guru emphasizes on ‘effective’ communication. Communication can either make or break your relationship. If there is one skill that many suffer with, is achieving effective communication within their relationships.

Communication is key when it comes to relationships. Couple communication peacefully exists when the factors below are taken into consideration.

1. Purposeful communication- this is the reason for being, and carrying out communication that effectively conveys the message.
2. Individuated- every member is unique.
3. Interconnected- partner’s actions influence each other, therefore for example, if one partner does an action, like buying a gift for the other, it influences a positive communication response and vice versa.
4. Differentiated- respecting each other for the different traits each partner has.
5. Bounded- boundaries should be constructed in the relationship to develop mutual respect.
6. Information processing- to generate, transmit, amplify, govern, distort and correct information. If you cannot communicate and follow a correct communication pathway, it reflects on the quality of your relationship.
7. Synergistic- the “we-ness”.
8. Efficient- the striving for balance among partners when it comes to communication.
9. Self-maintaining-  through the process of positive and negative feedback, couples support or limit each other physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually and economically.
10. Self-directing- any partner can seek to initiate change for the common or individual good.
11. Self-monitoring- tracking progress and outcomes for maintaining effective communication styles.
12. Self-correcting and repairing- correcting and healing the system of communication within your relationship from time to time.
13. Interacting subsystems- the influence of other sub-forces, Eg, how well is the communication between one partner and the other done under influence of environmental sub-systems like family pressure, work pressure etc.
14. Operating in context- contextually communicating in an environment of social, economic, political or spiritual importance.

The above is designed to heighten & enhance as well as enrich the functions in a relationship, and develop more meaningful communication styles and strategies.
