In the Kenyan movie “MVERA,” a community in Mombasa grapples with the devastating effects of corrupt leadership, plunging them into poverty. To address the dire situation, Thabiti, a cunning millionaire, offers young people the prospect of overseas employment through his local company. Among the applicants is Mvera, a self-centred woman on a quest to find her lost mother. However, their hopes are shattered when they uncover a sinister organ trafficking ring, revealing that they are all trapped. Mvera embarks on a heroic journey to return home and warn her fellow villagers about Thabiti, who seeks their votes in his bid for the position of Governor, promising support that comes at a terrible cost. As the movie aptly conveys, “Not every opportunity counts.”
