Today’s article is here to make you aware of the types of abuse. Many women and men nowadays, complain about their relationship, which is why domestic abuse dominantly affects our society in Kenya.

Did you know there are 6 types of abuse as follows:
1. Physical Abuse: This type of Violence is physical, or threats of violence. Includes thrashing, beating etc.
2. Digital Abuse: Are you constantly demanding to look through partner’s phone, monitoring their emails and texts, posting hurtful information or pictures on social media, or sending threatening texts or emails? This is classified as digital abuse.
3. Emotional/Psychological Abuse: There are many forms of emotional abuse. Victims don’t normally realize they are suffering this kind of abuse. This includes Insults, threats, isolation, extreme jealousy, and controlling behaviours. Here is an example- when your partner makes you feel guilty about visiting your mother – they are controlling.
4. Stalking: A pattern of following, monitoring, or harassing someone, causing them to fear for their safety. This can also further be a cause of emotional and psychological abuse.
5. Sexual Abuse: this sadly affects all types of ages, as young as 2 years are vulnerable to this kind of abuse. Sexual abuse is unwanted sexual contact, forcing pregnancy, or forcing partner to terminate a pregnancy. Are you being raped or constantly being sexually abused by your partner? Does he impose unwanted sexual behaviours on you?
6. Financial Abuse: This is using money to manipulate and control partner, not allowing them to work or go to school, not giving them money for necessities, or stealing their money or possessions. Does your partner extort money for unusual reasons?

These are the most commonly known forms of abuse existing in our society. They can be life-threatening and can destroy your self-esteem!
